New Delhi, August 3: The long-running legal proceedings involving the former leadership of the Wrestling Federation of India concluded on Monday with the Rouse Avenue Court clearing Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and former official Vinod Tomar of all charges. The judgment addresses the complaints submitted by women grapplers concerning alleged events between 2016 and 2019.
The dispute drew widespread public attention following month-long demonstrations in the national capital by top Indian wrestlers. The movement gained significant momentum after athletes attempted to march toward the newly constructed Parliament building during their protest period.
Addressing the court’s decision, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh asserted that the truth had prevailed. He maintained that he had offered to accept accountability if any charge were substantiated, declaring that the honourable acquittal brings closure to a protracted ordeal.
In the lead-up to the final judgment, athlete Vinesh Phogat publicly confirmed her participation as one of the original complainants while expressing ongoing concerns regarding governance within the sports body.
The trial moved forward after Delhi Police submitted a comprehensive chargesheet detailing statements and evidence. Following the discharge of one complainant during charge framing in May 2024 and the previous court approval closing the minor’s case, the court concluded that the remaining charges lacked sufficient evidence to establish guilt.
