Istanbul, April 15: A secondary school in Kahramanmaras became the site of a deadly shooting on Wednesday morning, resulting in the deaths of three students and one member of the teaching staff. The incident at Ayser Calık Secondary School has left approximately 20 others with various injuries, according to reports from the provincial governor’s office.

Governor Mukerrem Unluer declared that the perpetrator was an eighth-grade pupil who brought his father’s weapons onto the campus. The student, who also died at the scene, reportedly opened fire after entering the school grounds. Medical teams transferred the wounded to nearby hospitals as security forces established a perimeter around the facility.

“The attacker’s identity is yet to be determined,” officials stated, referring to the ongoing process of formal documentation. Witnesses and local media outlets affirmed that the shooter had hidden the firearms inside a backpack before beginning the assault.

The attack occurred just one day after another shooting in Sanliurfa’s Siverek district, where 16 people were wounded by a teenager armed with a shotgun. In the Tuesday attack, the 17-year-old suspect reportedly targeted individuals randomly in a high school yard before taking his own life. Governor Hasan Sildak maintained that the previous attacker was a former student born in 2007 who had a prior dispute with a peer.

The Turkish Interior Ministry affirmed that law enforcement is currently reviewing safety protocols at schools nationwide following these consecutive tragedies. Authorities asserted that the immediate priority remains the treatment of the injured and providing support to the families of the victims in Kahramanmaras.
