CHANDIGARH, May 22— An agreement between the Punjab government and sanitation worker unions has led to the immediate conclusion of a statewide municipal strike, officials declared Thursday.
The breakthrough occurred after extended negotiations aimed at resolving the workforce’s operational and structural demands. A specialized committee composed of both government representatives and union members will now manage the remaining procedural and legal complexities under a designated one-month deadline.
“The government and union representatives had mutually agreed to form a committee that would examine all pending demands and work towards a permanent and practical solution,” Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema stated.
Beyond the labor settlement, the briefing addressed recent verbal disputes between state and central leaders. Cheema asserted that branding a democratically elected Chief Minister as an anti-national operative devalues the political choices of the entire population of Punjab.
The Finance Minister challenged opposition leaders to explain their historical silence on past security questions, specifically pointing to unexamined relationships during previous tenures. He maintained that the current central leadership regularly relies on unsubstantiated claims to secure political leverage rather than engaging on factual ground.
Cheema also defended the constitutional right of independent social groups and youth movements to participate in public discourse without facing official ridicule or intimidation. He noted that contemporary political trends show a concerning pattern of attempting to restrict free speech and civic expression across the country.
