Chandigarh, August 15: All public and private schools in Chandigarh will remain closed on Monday, August 17, following an official announcement by Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria during the 80th Independence Day celebrations. The main ceremony unfolded at the Sector-17 Parade Ground, highlighting civic achievements, public service, and national sacrifice.
The Administrator initiated the commemorative events at the Bougainvillea Garden War Memorial, laying a wreath to remember fallen armed forces personnel before arriving at the central parade ground.
At the main venue, the national flag unfurling was accompanied by the national anthem, followed by the inspection of the Guard of Honour and a disciplined march past by police units, military contingents, and NCC cadets.
Distinguished public service was a major focus of the ceremony, with Administrator Kataria conferring commendation certificates upon 37 individuals, including government workers and private citizens, for notable achievements in fields ranging from sports and culture to social welfare.
Security personnel were similarly honored during the proceedings. The Administrator’s Police Medal for Distinguished and Meritorious Services was awarded to 22 officers of the Chandigarh Police, while one officer received the President’s Police Medal for outstanding service.
Senior leadership from the Union Territory administration observed the function, led by Chief Secretary H. Rajesh Prasad and Director General of Police Dr. Sagar Preet Hooda.
