Punjab, Haryana See Surplus Rainfall in June

by TheReportingTimes

CHANDIGARH, July 2Several parts of Punjab and Haryana received fresh rainfall on Tuesday, adding to what has already been a significantly wet June across the region. Chandigarh, which serves as the joint capital of both states, recorded 13.5 mm rainfall in the 24-hour period ending 8:30 am on Tuesday, pushing the city’s three-day total beyond 200 mm.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chandigarh received 213 mm rainfall in June, 37% above its monthly average of 155.5 mm. The city came close to breaking its all-time June rainfall record of 251.5 mm set in 2013.

Rainfall activity was widespread across both Punjab and Haryana. In Punjab, downpours were reported in Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Pathankot, Mohali, and Gurdaspur. In Haryana, showers fell over Ambala, Hisar, Rohtak, Karnal, Narnaul, Charkhi Dadri, Panchkula, and Rewari, among other districts.

The Met department confirmed that both states recorded surplus rainfall in June. Punjab received 69.7 mm, against a normal of 54.5 mm, registering a 28% surplus, while Haryana logged 71.7 mm, compared to its June normal of 55.3 mm, reflecting a 30% surplus.

Several districts experienced significantly above-average precipitation. In Punjab, Faridkot, Barnala, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ferozepur, Ludhiana, Pathankot, Patiala, Rupnagar, and Tarn Taran recorded more than their usual rainfall. Similarly, in Haryana, the districts of Bhiwani, Fatehabad, Hisar, Jhajjar, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Mahendragarh, Nuh, Yamunanagar, and Rewari received higher-than-normal rains.

Meteorologists say that while the surplus has helped ease early monsoon concerns, continued rainfall could lead to waterlogging and delays in agricultural operations if it persists in concentrated spells.

The IMD is closely monitoring weather patterns as the monsoon continues to advance across northern India.
