Kher pays ₹13L dues for govt house

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, Aug 8:— Former Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher has cleared outstanding dues of ₹13.13 lakh for her government-allotted residence, weeks after being served a notice by the UT administration for defaulting on rent and penalties.

The payment follows a notice issued on July 23 by the office of the Assistant Controller (F&A) Rents, seeking payment of ₹12.76 lakh in licence fee dues for House T-6/23, Sector 7, which had been allotted to Kher during her tenure in Parliament.

According to officials, the notice — first sent to her Sector 8-A residence on June 24 — warned that failure to pay would attract an annual interest of 12%. Kher deposited the total amount of ₹13,13,220 and obtained a no dues certificate from the authorities.

The dues include multiple components. A sum of ₹5,725 accounted for the regular licence fee from July 2023 to October 5, 2024. Beyond this period, unauthorised occupation charges kicked in. Between October 6, 2024 and January 5, 2025, a 100% penalty was imposed, amounting to ₹3.64 lakh, in line with a March 13, 2020 notification. From January 6 to April 12, 2025 — the date the house was officially vacated — a 200% penalty was levied, adding ₹8.20 lakh to the bill.

The rent controller’s calculation also included interest and miscellaneous charges, such as ₹26,106 dating back to November 8, 2017, under an older notification, and ₹59,680 in interest accumulated up to April 30, 2025.

In a prior communication with the administration, Kher had reportedly sought clarification and revision of the calculations, requesting that they be reviewed in accordance with the applicable rules. However, she eventually paid the full amount as calculated.

The case drew attention amid broader scrutiny of former officials overstaying or delaying clearance of dues for government accommodation in Chandigarh.
