Ruckus in Haryana Assembly Over Congress Protest on Law-and-Order

by TheReportingTimes

CHANDIGARH, Aug. 22 — The opening day of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha’s monsoon session witnessed uproar Friday as Congress MLAs staged a protest demanding an adjournment motion on what they termed a collapse of law and order in the state, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House for 30 minutes.

Soon after obituary references, Speaker Harvinder Kalyan called for question hour. Congress MLA Geeta Bhukkal rose to say her party had submitted an adjournment motion and pressed that all other business be suspended to debate the state’s law-and-order situation.

“The matter is under consideration. Let the question hour proceed,” the Speaker said, ruling that the motion would be taken up after the scheduled session.

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini intervened, remarking that law and order had indeed been questioned and suggested the Speaker allow discussion. But the Congress benches escalated their protest, storming into the well of the House.

MLAs held up posters reading “Beti bachao, beti padhao, kya hua kya hua?” and raised slogans of “BJP hai hai.” In response, members from the treasury benches countered with chants of “Bharat Mata ki jai.”

As the shouting continued and order could not be restored, the Speaker adjourned proceedings for 30 minutes.
