India weighs US H-1B visa curbs

by TheReportingTimes

NEW DELHI, Sept 21 — India on Saturday said it was studying the implications of the United States’ proposed restrictions on the H-1B visa programme, cautioning that the measures could create humanitarian challenges for families and disrupt longstanding professional exchanges.

“We have seen reports related to the proposed restrictions. The full implications of the measure are being examined by all concerned, including Indian industry, which has already put out an initial analysis clarifying some perceptions related to the H-1B programme,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.

The H-1B programme has played a vital role in enabling Indian professionals—particularly in the technology sector—to work in the US. The MEA underlined that both Indian and American industries have a stake in sustaining innovation and creativity, and consultations are expected on the way forward.

“Skilled talent mobility and exchanges have contributed enormously to technology development, innovation, economic growth, competitiveness and wealth creation in the US and India,” the ministry noted. It added that policymakers are expected to evaluate the recent steps in light of mutual benefits, including the strong people-to-people ties between the two nations.

At the same time, the MEA warned that restrictions could have humanitarian consequences by causing disruptions for families. “The government hopes that disruptions can be addressed suitably by the US authorities,” it added.

The Trump administration on Friday announced a $100,000 fee for new H-1B visa applications, describing the move as a step to curb alleged misuse of the programme. While the White House later clarified that the new requirement will not apply to current visa holders or renewals, concerns remain in India about the broader impact on the mobility of skilled professionals.
