Amritsar, October 13 — A major redevelopment project to transform four key radial roads leading to Sri Darbar Sahib into heritage-themed streets was inaugurated on Sunday. The Rs 41-crore initiative aims to enhance the spiritual and cultural ambience around the shrine while improving facilities for pilgrims and visitors.
The makeover will cover Maha Singh Road, Sherawala Gate, Ghio Mandi Road and Ramsar Road — all heavily used routes that see over one lakh devotees daily. The project features wider carriageways, improved lighting, artistic façades, and wall murals depicting Punjab’s rich heritage. All overhead power and communication cables will be shifted underground to create a clutter-free and aesthetically pleasing environment.
Dedicated to the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib, the project had been in planning for two years and is targeted for completion within 18 months. Officials said the upgraded streets will serve not only as access routes to the Darbar Sahib but also as new heritage attractions for tourists.
Mayor Jatinder Singh Moti Bhatia, who inaugurated the work, said the redevelopment would enhance Amritsar’s civic and spiritual character. “The city of Guru Ram Das Ji is witnessing visible transformation through ongoing efforts to improve roads, sanitation and infrastructure,” he said.
He added that the bioremediation process at the Bhagtanwala dump site was underway and that a new sanitation company would soon deploy over 300 vehicles to boost garbage collection and city cleanliness.
Councillors Jarnail Singh Dhod, Tarunveer Singh Candy, Vicky Dutta, AAP functionaries and several volunteers were also present at the event.
Officials said further infrastructure upgrades are planned, including work from Gate Khazana to Jhabal railway crossing and onwards to Iban Kalan, as part of the city’s larger development drive.
