NEW DELHI, FEB 6: A 25-year-old motorcyclist died in West Delhi’s Janakpuri after his vehicle fell into a deep excavation site managed by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB). The victim, identified as Kamal Dhyani, was discovered inside a 15-foot-deep pit on Friday morning, prompting an immediate high-level investigation into potential safety violations at the construction zone.

The incident occurred at a site where the DJB is currently rehabilitating pipelines. While the board claims preliminary checks showed the area was barricaded with green mesh, a woman spotted the body around 8 am, leading to the recovery. Police had been searching for Dhyani since 2:45 am after his brother reported him missing, eventually tracking his phone to the vicinity of Janakpuri District Park.

DCP West Darde Sharad Bhaskar confirmed the details of the fatal fall and the subsequent police response. “A pit was dug for some work of the Delhi Jal Board. Last night, 25-year-old Kamal Dhyani’s bike fell into this pit, and he unfortunately died. We will investigate all stakeholders involved in this DJB work,” Bhaskar said.

In response to the tragedy, Delhi Minister Ashish Sood announced a joint inspection involving the District Magistrate and senior police officials to review worksite protocols across the city. Simultaneously, Water Minister Parvesh Verma noted that a dedicated committee would look into the transparency of safety measures at the Janakpuri location.

The DJB issued a statement expressing sorrow and promising accountability for any negligence. “If any DJB official is found guilty at any level, strict action will be taken,” the board said, adding that the inquiry committee is expected to deliver its findings promptly to determine if signage and traffic management were sufficient.
