Rahul Gandhi Slams Indo-US Trade Pact

Opposition leader claims interim US deal hurts Indian farmers

by TheReportingTimes

New Delhi, Feb 11: Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on the Union Government in the Lok Sabha, labeling the interim trade agreement with the United States as a “one-sided” deal that compromises national interests. During a heated debate on the Union Budget, Gandhi claimed that the administration has neglected the welfare of the domestic agricultural sector to favor foreign imports.

“You have sold India. Are you not ashamed of selling India? You have sold our mother, Bharat Mata,” Gandhi said while addressing the treasury benches. He noted that the trade agreement would allow American agricultural products to flood local markets, directly threatening the livelihoods of Indian farmers who are already struggling under economic pressures.

The Congress leader further criticized the government’s broader economic policies, stating that the domestic manufacturing landscape is in decline. He said the Indian textile industry is “finished” due to unfavorable trade terms and a lack of protective measures for local artisans and factory owners.

Government representatives met the criticism with protests, but Gandhi maintained that the budget fails to address the core needs of the working class. He mentioned that the move to open up the market so aggressively to the US would lead to an imbalance that the Indian economy is not prepared to handle.
