Mumbai, April 12: Asha Bhosle, the voice that defined Indian cinema for more than seventy years, died on Sunday at the age of 92. The iconic singer breathed her last at Breach Candy Hospital in South Mumbai, where she was being treated for a chest infection and related pulmonary issues.

The veteran artist was placed in the intensive care unit on Saturday after her health took a sudden turn. Dr. Pratit Samdani, who was part of the medical team, stated that her death was the result of multi-organ failure. Family sources affirmed that her son, Anand, was present during her final moments. The news of her demise has prompted an outpouring of grief from the film and music fraternity, with many describing her as the last surviving titan of Bollywood’s golden age.

Bhosle was renowned for an incredible repertoire of over 12,000 songs in multiple languages. She gained widespread acclaim for her collaborations with composers like O.P. Nayyar and her late husband, R.D. Burman. “She passed away due to multi-organ failure a few minutes ago,” Dr. Samdani declared to the press on Sunday afternoon. Her granddaughter, Zanai, had previously mentioned that the singer was battling severe exhaustion prior to her admission.

Beyond her musical achievements, Bhosle was a recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and was a successful entrepreneur with a global restaurant chain. Colleagues noted that her ability to adapt to changing musical trends—from classical melodies to contemporary pop—was unmatched. Officials stated that her funeral will be conducted with full state honours on Monday, as the nation prepares to bid a final farewell to the “Melody Queen.”
