Chandigarh, May 3: A massive increase in tax compliance and enforcement has propelled Punjab to the top of the national rankings for GST revenue expansion. Data released by the state government indicates that April 2026 yielded the most successful collection month in the state’s history.

Net GST collections for the month stood at ₹2725.08 crore, a 70.70 percent jump over the previous April. Total gross collections reached ₹2987.38 crore, cementing the state’s position as a leader in fiscal mobilization among North Indian states.

“The State has recorded a Gross GST collection of ₹2987.38 crore alongside a Net GST collection of ₹2725.08 crore,” Minister Harpal Singh Cheema asserted in a press communique. He stated that the figures reflect a dedicated strategy by the administration to improve the state’s financial standing.

Official data from the Government of India confirmed that Punjab’s 66 percent growth in post-settlement GST is the highest recorded by any state in the country. The Minister noted that this achievement is a direct result of balancing technology-driven enforcement with efforts to help honest taxpayers.

Minister Cheema declared that the Taxation Department has been utilizing advanced data analytics to identify irregularities. These efforts yielded more than ₹175 crore in penalties recently, alongside high-profile field operations.

“Through the extensive leverage of data analytics, coordinated field action, and intelligence-based inspections, we have successfully imposed penalties exceeding ₹175 crore,” Cheema stated. He cited a recent single-day operation in which nearly 200 vehicles were intercepted to curb evasion.

Addressing the technical aspects of the report, the Minister clarified that the growth remains impressive even when accounting for a significant IGST adjustment from the prior year. He asserted that the organic growth in the tax base remains steady at over 10 percent.

“Punjab’s top ranking in GST revenue mobilization is a testament to the Taxation department’s focused strategy,” the Finance Minister affirmed. He added that the government remains committed to maintaining a transparent system while taking firm action against those who attempt to bypass tax laws.
