Chandigarh, June 11: Residents across Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh can expect a sharp turn in weather as an active Western Disturbance brings widespread rain and strong winds to break the intense heatwave grip. The regional meteorological center has predicted severe weather patterns, including thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds gusting between 60 to 70 kilometers per hour, spanning June 11 and June 12.
The weather system is expected to heavily impact specific pockets of the region before losing strength. Surender Paul, Director of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Chandigarh, affirmed that the rainfall is associated with an active Western Disturbance that will influence the region on June 11 and 12, adding that after this period, the system is expected to weaken. He further asserted that the anticipated rainfall would bring significant relief from the ongoing heatwave affecting the region.
Under the weather department’s tracking terminology, a forecast of rain at “many places” indicates that precipitation will cover 50 to 75 percent of the area, while a forecast for “a few places” points to a more scattered coverage affecting 25 to 50 percent of the locality.
On June 11, heavy activity is concentrated across several districts of Haryana, with rainfall likely at many places in Ambala, Yamunanagar, Kaithal, Karnal, and Kurukshetra. The remaining districts of Haryana, alongside Chandigarh, are scheduled to witness rain at a few places. The momentum shifts slightly on June 12, with widespread downpours expected at many places in Chandigarh, Panchkula, Ambala, Kurukshetra, and Yamunanagar, while the rest of Haryana transitions to more scattered showers.
Punjab will follow a similar dual-day wet spell. Regional forecasters have predicted rainfall at many places on June 11 across Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, and Patiala, with the remaining districts seeing a lighter spread. By June 12, the heaviest rainfall coverage will contract to Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, SAS Nagar, and Rupnagar, leaving the rest of the state to experience rain at a few places.
