Chandigarh, June 11: The rumors surrounding a potential electoral tie-up between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab carry no truth, state party chief Kewal Singh Dhillon announced.
Groundwork has officially commenced for the party to field candidates independently in all 117 assembly constituencies. Dhillon affirmed that the party high command has left the state leadership entirely out of any alliance talks, because no such plans exist. He noted that residents of the state are eagerly awaiting the enforcement of the model code of conduct, which he predicted would instantly alter the state’s political dynamics in favor of his party.
The developments come amid sharp criticism from political rivals who have targeted the rumored coalition. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann described the speculation as a sign of desperation from both traditional parties, while AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal made strong statements questioning the move. Adding to the debate, former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh publicly doubted the ability of the party to capture power without an ally.
Dhillon dismissed the opposition’s remarks as baseless fears stemming from a shifting electorate. He stated that Kejriwal is panicking over losing his political grip and is attempting to play a communal card to stay relevant. The BJP leader maintained that communal harmony in Punjab has withstood far tougher times and warned against divisive politics.
The state chief also defended federal investigations against claims made by opponents. He declared that the public now sees through the narrative constructed around recent ED actions. He further promised that legal measures would target only individuals involved in wrongdoing, ensuring complete protection for the innocent.
A formal campaign strategy is set to roll out immediately through a series of federal visits. Union Ministers will arrive in the state starting June 13, and National President Nitin Nabin will follow with a strategy tour between June 20 and June 22. This follows a recent briefing where Union Home Minister Amit Shah shared his worries regarding state security, specifically focusing on the drug crisis and general law enforcement issues.
