Kapurthala, July 11: A house painter is on the run after allegedly using an iron rod and a firearm to rob an elderly couple who had granted him regular access to their home in Kapurthala’s Sunny Side neighbourhood. The suspect fled the scene on a motorcycle with an assortment of gold and diamond jewellery worth lakhs of rupees alongside substantial cash reserves.
The criminal act occurred following 20 days of continuous renovation work at the residence, during which the family treated the worker as a reliable acquaintance. The Kapurthala police have registered a formal case covering attempted murder, armed robbery, wrongful confinement, and violations of the Arms Act.
The peaceful afternoon turned chaotic when the worker suddenly ambushed the homeowners in their bedroom. City Kapurthala SHO Amandeep declared that the suspect chose a moment when the couple was completely defenceless, using physical violence to suppress them before trying to confine the woman separately in a bathroom.
After meeting resistance from the victims, the attacker shoved both individuals into a single room, turning the key from the hallway to secure his solo access to the house. He spent the next several hours breaking into secure wardrobes and privacy lockers while the wounded homeowners remained trapped without any communication devices.
The family’s younger generation stumbled upon the aftermath of the robbery after returning from daily errands. The victims’ son stated to investigators that they found the main entrance unsecured and heard muffled noises coming from the locked room, leading to the discovery of his injured parents.
The investigation has widened to incorporate digital forensics and electronic tracking. Pawan Kumar maintained in his police statement that the accused went as far as sending a hostile audio recording to the family after fleeing the sector. Officers asserted that nearby security cameras caught the suspect departing the area on a two-wheeler, and focused raids are actively being executed to trap him.
