New Delhi, August 4: Pakistan network providers have disrupted access to the main web platform of Al Jazeera amid escalating unrest and controversial regional polling across Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The unannounced restrictions were noticed after the international network published detailed reporting on local resistance and the security forces’ presence in Muzaffarabad.
Civil society monitors and regular web users confirmed that the channel’s main online news server is completely unreachable through domestic networks. The administrative measures have emerged alongside government dissatisfaction with global media framing of the regional electoral process.
Criticizing the network’s editorial direction, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting declared in a public notice, “We have taken note of Al Jazeera’s selective reporting from handpicked polling stations in Muzaffarabad today. Through carefully chosen timings and scripted statements from selected individuals, the channel has sought to misrepresent the AJK elections and the voting process.”
Addressing international press narratives, official communications maintained that “such yellow journalism only confirms the agenda of external actors with vested interests who are attempting to delegitimise this electoral exercise and undermine the popular will of the people of Muzaffarabad and AJK, clearly demonstrated today in their rejection of anarchy and coercion.”
While state authorities have refrained from issuing a formal executive decree, industry observers maintain that the systematic blocking reflects standard policy directives regarding public order and national image during sensitive geopolitical developments.
