A high-level administrative review led by Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit has placed Bihar’s disaster management infrastructure on high alert due to an anticipated surge in the Gandak River. The preventative measures follow severe flash flooding in Nepal’s upper catchment areas, which generated a water wave of nearly three metres heading toward northern Bihar districts.
Addressing the administrative preparedness, Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit stated that state agencies are maintaining continuous vigilance along critical river stretches and embankments. He declared that district authorities must execute proactive evacuation measures, maintain adequate rescue boat deployments, and establish functional community kitchens to protect vulnerable populations. He maintained that the government has mobilized all necessary field units to handle potential emergencies smoothly.
The state Disaster Management Department has placed West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Saran, Muzaffarpur, and Vaishali under special observation, while extending monitoring guidelines to neighboring sensitive districts including Sitamarhi and Sheohar. Specialized NDRF and SDRF rescue teams have been stationed at strategic locations to assist local administrations.
The cross-border flood surge originated in central Nepal early Wednesday, destroying riverbank settlements and damaging at least twelve hydropower projects. To mitigate upstream pressure, water resource engineers in Bihar have been instructed to monitor barrage discharges around the clock while keeping public communication channels open to prevent misinformation.
