Chandigarh: The multi-day stir at the Chandigarh-Mohali border concluded on Monday evening following consensus between agitating farmer unions and the state leadership. Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian delivered the written assurance to union leaders, leading to the formal withdrawal of the protest.
As part of the commitments, the state government pledged to hold a special legislative session within 30 days. The assembly plans to adopt resolutions concerning regional water rights, provisions of the Punjab Reorganisation Act, the Dam Safety Act, and the proposed Seed Bill before submitting them to the central government.
Minister Khudian maintained that constructive engagement helped achieve a resolution, asserting that farmer welfare remains central to state policies. He highlighted plans for a new One-Time Settlement scheme aimed at relieving farmers of debt burdens tied to cooperative financial institutions.
Addressing agricultural returns, Mr Khudian affirmed that Punjab will offer competitive sugarcane pricing across the country and noted that instructions were issued to initiate the pricing process without delay. He maintained that the government will ensure prompt clearing of dues by private sugar mills, while outstanding matters will be addressed through a newly formed joint committee.
