Chandigarh, Oct 3: In a major organizational restructuring ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly polls, the Congress party has appointed former Cabinet Minister and Olympian Pargat Singh as the new chief of its state unit.

Born in Mithapur, Jalandhar, in March 1965, Pargat Singh gained national prominence as an elite defender and captain of the Indian hockey team before entering public life. Currently serving his third term as an MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment, his elevation to the party’s top state post follows the formal step-down of Ludhiana MP Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, who had headed the state unit since April 2022.

Party officials asserted that the choice of Pargat Singh serves to bridge various internal factions and present a cohesive leadership unit across Punjab’s key regions. The new PPCC president affirmed that his immediate priorities will focus on grassroots mobilization, youth engagement, and public welfare campaigns leading into the next election cycle.
