Bathinda, Oct 16: Rail traffic along the Bathinda-Rajpura line faced major delays on Friday following the derailment of five automobile-carrying freight wagons near Rampura Phul railway station.
The goods train was carrying new vehicles from Gujarat toward Malerkotla district when multiple coaches slipped off the iron rails just meters ahead of the station area. Station staff and platform personnel witnessed the detachment of the train’s locomotive shortly before the derailment occurred.
Emergency response teams and Government Railway Police arrived at the scene to secure the area and assess the damage across the multi-line rail corridor.
“The railway section has four lines (tracks), out of which three have been affected by this incident. During the restoration work, a crane will remain on one line, which may affect the movement of other trains. A major accident was averted due to the separation of the engine,” affirmed GRP Rampura Phul In-Charge ASI Gurjant Singh.
Railway authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries were sustained during the event. Specialized technical crews were deployed to clear the affected tracks and identify the underlying mechanical or structural issues responsible for the accident, as train schedules across the region experienced ongoing delays throughout the afternoon.
