Chandigarh, June 20:  State-run rehabilitation hubs across Punjab are successfully deploying books as structural tools to restore mental well-being and promote sustainable sobriety among patients. Backed by young professionals from the Punjab’s Leadership in Mental Health Programme, these reading spaces are fostering healthier behavioral routines and bridging critical awareness gaps within the clinical ecosystem.

The initiative has expanded its footprint across multiple districts, ensuring patients gain easy access to inspirational literature, historical volumes, and educational texts. Beyond emotional solace, the libraries have filled essential information gaps regarding public health and the underlying risks associated with substance dependency.

Sandeep Kumari, a clinical psychologist stationed at the Hoshiarpur government de-addiction centre, declared that the long-term impact on patient behavior has been deeply transformative. She observed that individuals whose cognitive faculties had been severely numbed by prolonged chemical dependency gradually began making conscious efforts to visit the library, utilizing motivational literature to regain essential life focus.

The specialized book collections also serve an educational purpose, introducing foundational health concepts to the readers. Historical literature and regional spiritual texts remain highly requested, as patients naturally connect with narratives centered on perseverance and eventual triumph over hardships.

Baldev Singh, a resident from Malerkotla undergoing rehabilitation, declared that the facility library allowed him to safely rekindle a constructive habit he had abandoned during active addiction. He maintained that keeping his mind continuously occupied with literature remains vital to staying completely focused on his long-term wellness goals.
