NEW DELHI, July 30 — Clarifying its position on recent demonstrations in the capital, the Delhi government issued a formal policy notification directing police authorities to refrain from initiating fresh legal proceedings against protest participants. The order sets out clear parameters for handling cases arising from the July 20 ‘Chalo Sansad’ march, establishing a clear distinction between general demonstrators and individuals with documented criminal records.
In its notification, the home department instructed that any review regarding individuals already taken into custody should proceed without delay.
“No adverse legal action will be taken by any of the police authorities within NCT of Delhi against those persons who have been involved in these protests,” stated the Home Department order, adding that protection shall not extend to persons with criminal antecedents.
Using advanced monitoring systems, security personnel identified over 2,800 participants with past criminal records during the event. Department officials maintained that while legal measures continue for individuals with prior antecedents, standard participants face no further procedural action.
