SHIMLA, July 1 — Senior BJP leader and five-time legislator Rajeev Bindal was re-elected unopposed as the Himachal Pradesh BJP president for a third term on Tuesday, with Union minister Jitendra Singh declaring his uncontested victory during the formal announcement.

Bindal, 70, was the sole candidate to file nomination papers for the state party chief’s post on Monday, paving the way for his reappointment. He previously served a brief stint as the party’s state president and was reappointed in April 2023.

A seasoned politician, Bindal has represented the Solan and Nahan constituencies across five assembly terms from 2002 to 2022. He served as Health Minister in the Prem Kumar Dhumal-led government between 2007 and 2012 and was unanimously elected Speaker of the 13th Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha in January 2018, a post he held till January 2020.

Meanwhile, eight members were elected to the party’s National Council from Himachal Pradesh. The newly elected members include former minister Govind Thakur and party general secretaries Bihari Lal Sharma, Trilok Kapoor, Pawan Kajal, Rashmi Dhar Sood, Payal Vaidya, Rajiv Saizal and Sanjeev Katwal.

Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, former Union minister Anurag Thakur, Lok Sabha MPs Suresh Kashyap, Kangana Ranaut and Rajiv Bharadwaj, along with Rajya Sabha MPs Indu Goswami, Sikender Kumar and Harsh Mahajan, have been included in the Council as ex-officio members.

Bindal’s re-election signals continuity in the state BJP’s leadership as the party gears up for future electoral contests under his stewardship.
