Violence Erupts at PU During Senate Election Protests

by TheReportingTimes

CHANDIGARH, 10 Nov — Violence broke out at Panjab University on Monday as students protesting the delay in Senate elections clashed with police while entering the campus through Gate No. 1. Some students reportedly took police canes during the confrontation.

The campus was under tight security, with barricades and buses stationed to prevent unrest, after students called for a ‘PU Bandh’ to demand immediate notification of elections.

“The administration and police are using force to suppress our mobilisation. These measures are illegal and undemocratic,” student leaders said.

Several political figures visited the dharna site, including Punjab Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian, Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, senior Congress leader Rana Gurjeet Singh, MPs Dr Amar Singh and Dr Dharamvira Gandhi, former Union Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, and other regional leaders such as Dalvir Singh Goldy, Gurnam Singh Charuni, and Vikramaditiya Singh.

IG Pushpinder Kumar and Chandigarh Police SSP Kanwardeep Kaur were present at the campus to monitor the situation.

The protests are linked to the Centre’s recent reforms at Panjab University, which have stirred political tensions in Punjab and Chandigarh, even after some of the controversial changes were rolled back.
