Targeted Shooting Claims Life of Legal Petitioner

Specialized units mobilized following daylight homicide near educational institution

PHAGWARA, MAY 30 — A prominent legal petitioner was gunned down in broad daylight outside an educational facility in Kapurthala district on Saturday, initiating a multi-agency manhunt across regional borders.

The deceased, identified as Jalandhar resident Simranjeet Singh, was intercepted by two individuals on a motorcycle near the main perimeter of Lovely Professional University. Field updates indicate that the attackers pulled alongside the activist and discharged multiple rounds at point-blank range before escaping the vicinity.

“Multiple teams, including Counter Intelligence units, have been deployed to nab the accused,” Jalandhar Range DIG Naveen Singla stated while discussing the operational response. Singla noted that forensic investigators are currently analyzing a handgun found on the pavement and a rifle recovered from an abandoned vehicle nearby to identify ballistic matches.

The targeted homicide follows a series of high-profile filings by the activist, who spent over ten years auditing regional administrations and tracking official corruption. Prior to his death, Singh had provided specialized investigative packets to central enforcement offices concerning institutional irregularities linked to jailed state minister Sanjeev Arora.

Security officials acknowledged that the activist faced active threats and had escaped a physical assault inside Jalandhar’s Model Town neighborhood last year. Although the state had assigned a personal security detail to mitigate the ongoing risk, the protection was not present during his transit on Saturday, leaving him vulnerable to the fatal ambush.
