Legal Relief for Akali Leaders in Majitha Case

Sessions court approves bail applications after police fail to present video evidence

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, June 15: Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, Jodh Singh Samra, and Jatinder Pal Singh secured bail from the Additional District and Sessions Judge on Monday following an alleged altercation at the Majitha police station. The case, which centered on charges of obstructing public servants, saw a key shift when the police administration could not fulfill a judicial request for visual evidence.

Amanbir Singh Sayali, the legal counsel representing Akali supporter Jobanpreet Singh, noted that the police department failed to produce the requested CCTV footage of the purported ruckus and forced entry into the police station when asked by the court.

The entire controversy stems from the detention of Jobanpreet Singh during the recent municipal council and nagar panchayat polls. The Akali Dal leadership affirmed that the police acted under political motivation and handled the arrest illegally without notifying the family. This prompted Majithia, party supporters, and local farmer leaders to stage an immediate protest outside the police station gate.

According to the official police version, the gathering turned into a confrontation when Majithia and his associates entered the building to pull Jobanpreet out of custody. The FIR filed by the authorities asserted that the former minister snatched a mobile phone from a sub-inspector and destroyed official papers during the commotion.

The case previously involved Majithia’s legal advisor, Bikramjit Bath, who had accompanied the political leader to get a copy of Jobanpreet’s FIR. Bath’s inclusion in the police case caused widespread protests by the Amritsar Bar Association, which declared the move an attack on practicing lawyers. Following the institutional backlash, a Special Investigation Team was promptly established by senior officers, which subsequently cleared Bath of all charges and led to his formal discharge before the bail hearing for the remaining accused.
