New Delhi, June 30: The Supreme Court is considering a central government request to consolidate multiple high court petitions regarding ethanol distribution into a singular national narrative, ensuring the 20 per cent blending policy proceeds without domestic supply disruptions. Concurrently, the administration has moved to assure the public regarding the mechanical safety and legal validity of utilizing E20 fuel.

Addressing consumer anxieties raised by motoring enthusiasts regarding potential engine wear and fuel efficiency drops, the government stated that there is no verified evidence linking the current blend to mechanical degradation. Furthermore, the Union Oil Ministry clarified that recent rumors suggesting E20 fuel usage could invalidate vehicle insurance policies are completely groundless, following a formal review with sector stakeholders on June 24.

The legal complexities surfaced during a challenge by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) against a regional ruling on supply allocations. When questioned by the apex court regarding the decision to bypass a division bench of the High Court, Attorney General R Venkataramani asserted that immediate central intervention was necessary to protect national policy. “The 20 per cent blend is an ongoing government experiment that will yield definitive results by next year,” Venkataramani informed the court, explaining that centralized resolution is vital since existing supply contracts are due for renewal this coming October.

The administrative defense mirrors global standards, with the oil ministry noting that ethanol blending is a highly successful practice in major international economies such as the United States, Brazil, and Japan. The program is designed to simultaneously bolster India’s energy independence, support the domestic farming community, and reduce the overall environmental footprint.
