Jalandhar, Nov 2: Renowned international hockey icon Floris Jan Bovelander joined spectators and officials at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar on Monday, participating in the proceedings of the Hero Asian Champions Trophy 2026 after accepting an invitation from Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.
The 1996 Atlanta Olympics gold medalist and 1990 World Cup champion stated that the initial conversation with Chief Minister Mann during his European visit in April laid the foundation for his journey to Punjab. He noted that the Chief Minister’s persistent encouragement and genuine love for the game made it an honour to witness the international tournament firsthand in Jalandhar.
Reflecting on the global evolution of the sport, Bovelander asserted that India has rendered exceptional service toward expanding the reach and popularity of hockey worldwide. He maintained that his foundational memories of competing against Indian squads were consistently highlighted by the skill and resilience of players hailing from Punjab, affirming that the state continues to serve as the bedrock of the national team’s success.
As part of his engagement with state sports development programs, the visiting ambassador led an interactive coaching workshop involving 37 local hockey mentors and promising academy players. Flanked by prominent sports figures including Olympic medalist Gurjant Singh, Dronacharya Awardee Jiwanjot Singh Teja, and coach Avtar Singh, Bovelander provided hands-on instruction regarding drag-flick execution, tactical positioning, and penalty corner management.
The Sports Department of Punjab organized an official felicitation ceremony to honour the decorated Dutch international for his ongoing commitment to global hockey promotion. Expressing gratitude for the reception accorded to him by the state administration and local enthusiasts, Bovelander confirmed that he will extend his stay to cover the final legs of the event at the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior Hockey Stadium in Mohali later in the week.
