Amritsar, Sept 20: An individual accused in the fatal shooting of Assistant Sub-Inspector Harjit Singh died in a hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds during an encounter with police personnel in Amritsar on Saturday night.
Police tracking the case had established the identities of two suspects using technical surveillance, local intelligence, and visual footage from the night of the incident. ASI Harjit Singh was fatally wounded while deployed near the Bhagtanwala grain market late Thursday evening.
The encounter unfolded when officers stationed at a night checkpoint attempted to intercept two men riding a two-wheeler. Upon being asked to stop, the riders discharged four rounds toward the police party while attempting to break through subsequent security barriers.
Law enforcement personnel returned fire in self-defence, resulting in injury to Deepak Singh, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The police party subsequently secured a .30-bore handgun along with live ammunition, a mobile phone, and the scooter involved in the movement.
Multi-agency teams continue scanning surveillance camera feeds across the district to trace the second suspect, following preliminary leads that showed two men fleeing the original crime scene on a two-wheeler.
The late police official was accorded state honors during his funeral service at Rampur Bhutwind village, which took place in the presence of family members, senior police leadership, and community members following his daughter’s arrival from England.
