Kapurthala, May 24: A coordinated tactical intervention by regional police successfully restored order inside the Kapurthala prison facility following a multi-hour disturbance involving over 100 inmates, senior administrative controllers affirmed Sunday.
The incident originated close to midnight within the prison’s fourth sector when internal rivalries led to an open brawl between inmates. According to emergency logs, the situation destabilized when prisoners breached immediate block barriers, scaled structural roofs, and ignited a fire inside Barrack Number 4. Law enforcement teams from surrounding zones were mobilized to cordon off the area after inmates resisted early containment efforts by on-duty watchmen.
The operational response relied on defensive blockades and non-lethal crowd-control munitions to push the rioting groups back into their assigned holding cells.
“A fight broke out among inmates of the Kapurthala jail, following which around 100 to 150 prisoners came out of their barracks, indulged in hooliganism, and set fire to Barrack No. 4,” DIG Jalandhar Range Naveen Singla declared, confirming that specialized tear gas grenades were utilized to suppress the non-compliant groups.
The narrative surrounding the intervention highlights the careful approach used by local tactical teams to re-establish total control without incurring casualties among prison employees. While one inmate required off-site hospitalization for injuries linked to a tear gas container, prison authorities noted that the remainder of the facility’s population remained entirely secure. Administration officials confirmed that full operations have resumed, and specialized teams are currently investigating the primary root cause of the initial altercation.
