Proposed Civil Code Bill Faces Opposition in West Bengal

Chief Minister outlines legislative road map ahead of Assembly session

Kolkata, June 26: The Trinamool Congress has vowed to oppose a newly proposed Uniform Civil Code Bill in West Bengal, following an announcement by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari regarding its upcoming implementation. The opposition party has voiced serious reservations, labeling the policy shift as part of a broader political strategy.

The state administration intends to utilize a multi-state template to draft the uniform laws. According to government plans, an independent committee headed by a retired judicial officer will handle the foundational work, matching the legislative steps previously taken by several other state administrations.

Further operational specifics regarding the bill are expected to be presented to lawmakers at the start of the week. “There is a prescribed procedure for it and I will explain it in the Assembly. A committee will be constituted under the leadership of a retired judge. Following the same procedure adopted in Gujarat, Uttarakhand and Assam, the process will be carried out. I will provide further details in the Assembly on Monday,” Adhikari asserted during a press interaction in Kolkata.

The policy move aligns with manifesto commitments made during public campaigns, where administrative leaders pledged to establish uniform regulations and adjust state policies. Legislative discussions regarding the structure of the committee and its timeline are set to commence on Monday.
