SAMANA, MAY 16— Veteran leader Surjit Singh Rakhra formally joined the Aam Aadmi Party during a public rally in Samana on Saturday, fulfilling a promise tied to the state’s recent legislative actions.

The former minister’s induction into the ruling fold follows his recent exit from the opposition bench and was capped off by a formal welcome from Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, who noted that the state benefits from experienced administrative voices.

“I thank Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and the AAP leadership for welcoming me into the party,” Rakhra stated during his address to the gathering. He revealed that his entry followed a long-standing personal commitment linked to a 400-foot tower protest by regional activists demanding strict legal deterrents for desecration acts.

According to the reordered details of the agreement, the implementation of the strict anti-sacrilege law acted as the definitive catalyst for the transition. Rakhra maintained that where prior administrations demonstrated a lack of political will, the current government successfully secured executive approval for the dynamic penal framework.

“Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann told me that if the government enacted a strong anti-beadbi law, then I should support the party,” Rakhra declared. “Once the law was passed, I had to honour my commitment.”

The Chief Minister asserted that Rakhra’s structural shift highlights the deep organizational challenges facing the state’s older political establishments, stating that traditional entities are struggling to retain core members.

“Leaders who once claimed they would rule Punjab for 25 years are now left without even 25 people in the party,” Mann noted. He affirmed that the Rakhra family’s legacy of regional public service would strengthen governance execution across the Patiala and Samana belts, particularly as the state accelerates its agricultural development initiatives.
