BJP to Contest 2027 Punjab Polls Alone: Sharma

by TheReportingTimes

Ludhiana, July 25: Dismissing talks of a renewed alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma on Thursday announced that the Bharatiya Janata Party will contest all 117 seats in the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections independently.

Speaking at a gathering of BJP leaders and workers at Guru Nanak Dev Bhawan, Sharma said, “We fought the 2022 Assembly polls and the 2024 Lok Sabha election alone. In 2027, we’ll contest solo again — across all constituencies.”

His remarks come amid speculation of a possible tie-up with the Akalis, who exited the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in 2020 following differences over the now-repealed three farm laws.

Sharma urged party cadres to intensify grassroots efforts in the state. “People of Punjab have high expectations from the BJP. Our party has always contributed meaningfully to the state’s development. It’s time to pull up our socks and reach out to every corner of Punjab,” he said.

Taking aim at the Aam Aadmi Party government, Sharma termed the recently introduced anti-sacrilege bill in the state Assembly a “political stunt.”

“If the ruling party was truly serious about the issue, it would have ensured that those responsible for the 2015 sacrilege incidents were brought to justice. The existing legal provisions are adequate to deal with such crimes,” he said.

The BJP leader’s comments come as the political landscape in Punjab continues to shift, with realignments and solo strategies shaping early narratives ahead of the 2027 elections.
