GRAP Stage-IV Returns to NCR

Authorities Order Emergency Measures as AQI Hits 439

by TheReportingTimes

New Delhi, Jan 18: Emergency pollution controls are back in effect across Delhi-NCR as the region’s air quality remained in the “severe” category for the second consecutive day. The move comes as the capital struggles with a combination of hazardous smog, dense morning fog, and a biting cold wave that has pushed temperatures several notches below normal.

The Air Quality Index reached 439 on Sunday morning, with several neighborhoods reporting levels nearing the “severe plus” threshold of 450. Residents in areas like Anand Vihar and Dwarka faced even more hazardous conditions, with local monitors recording AQI levels as high as 489.

The Commission for Air Quality Management noted that the immediate escalation to Stage-IV measures was necessary to prevent the situation from spiraling further. This stage involves the most stringent curbs on vehicular movement and construction activities within the capital and its surrounding districts.

“The CAQM Sub-Committee on GRAP unanimously decides to invoke all actions as envisaged under Stage-IV of the extant GRAP – ‘Severe+’ Air Quality, with immediate effect, in the entire NCR, as a proactive measure,” the regulatory body stated.

Meteorological conditions have played a significant role in the current spike. The India Meteorological Department mentioned that dense fog covered isolated spots across the city during the early hours, while moderate fog was observed more widely. The freezing temperatures, which dropped to 5°C in some parts, have created a stagnant air mass that prevents smoke and dust from dispersing.

Public health experts have warned that the current air quality poses an extreme threat to those with respiratory or cardiovascular ailments. In response, the government has reissued health advisories urging people to minimize physical exertion outdoors.

The commission clarified that these new restrictions are being implemented on top of the existing regulations. “This is in addition to the actions under Stages I, II & III of the extant GRAP already in force in NCR,” the order confirmed.
