Chandigarh, Sept. 25 — The Army on Thursday commemorated the diamond jubilee of India’s victory in the 1965 Indo-Pak War with a solemn ceremony at the Veer Smriti lawn, Western Command headquarters in Chandimandir.

The event began with a wreath-laying ceremony, where Haryana Governor Ashim Kumar Ghosh, Western Command GOC-in-C Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Katiyar, former army chiefs and war veterans paid homage to soldiers who lost their lives in the conflict.

In his address, Governor Ghosh praised the critical role of the Western Command during the war, which was fought across Punjab, Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir. He also recalled the sacrifice and bravery of Lt Col A.B. Tarapore and CQMH Abdul Hamid, both of whom were posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military honor.

The 1965 war, which lasted 22 days, ended with India successfully repelling Pakistani advances and securing its western borders, a victory the Army said continues to inspire generations of soldiers.
